The Royal Astronomical Society (RAS) is encouraging people across the UK to observe the spectacular partial solar eclipse on 12th August 2026 safely and responsibly. Through its network of affiliated astronomical societies, public outreach programmes, and expert guidance, the RAS is helping to raise awareness of the eclipse and the importance of using approved solar viewing equipment throughout the event.
The eclipse will be the deepest seen from the UK since 1999, with around 90% of the Sun obscured from many parts of the country. The RAS and local astronomy groups are expected to support public observing events, giving people the opportunity to experience this remarkable celestial event safely while learning more about the science behind solar eclipses.
